Applicable to undergraduate students only. English placement is based on GSAT or AST scores upon admission. You can check your placement in the course selection system under [Course Selection Information] → [English Placement Inquiry]. Students admitted through other channels (e.g., special selection) are placed in the Basic level and can either apply for a change of placement or take a placement test at the beginning of the semester.
You can change your placement once before your first English course. The requirements for change are: TOEIC Listening & Reading - Intermediate: 550, High-Intermediate: 600, Advanced: 700.

  • Practical Experience Courses: Service Learning, Applied Courses, Primer on College Life.
  • Foreign and overseas Chinese degree-seeking students, as well as those who completed senior secondary education in a non-Chinese medium (e.g., IB, home-schooled, or international/foreign school graduates), may apply to use either Chinese Language Center courses or the General Education course 'Reading the Sino-Island' (GEAI1083) to fulfill the 'Critical Thinking and Expression in Chinese' requirement, subject to Si Wan College regulations and with departmental assistance.
  • International and overseas Chinese degree-seeking students may also apply to use courses from the Chinese Language Center (CLC of NSYSU) for credit transfer; please contact the Division of Overseas and International Degree Student Affairs.

English Graduation Requirement & Course Regulations

Tip
  • Students from English-speaking countries (e.g., the U.K., the U.S., Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the Republic of Ireland, the Republic of South Africa, etc.) may apply for a waiver of up to 6 English course credits and are also exempt from the English proficiency requirement.
  • To apply, students must submit supporting documents, including a passport and academic transcripts from secondary school or above.
  • Please note that Credit Waiving and Credit Transfer are processed through different procedures:
    Credit Waiving: Only students from English-speaking countries are eligible to apply for Waiving: from both English courses and the English proficiency requirement.
    Credit Transfer: Overseas Chinese students or other non-native English-speaking international students may apply for credit transfer in accordance with the applicable regulations for their admission year. However, credit transfer does not exempt them from the English proficiency requirement.
Important: The following content does not apply to students of the Department of Foreign Languages and Literature. Please refer to your department's regulations.

English Graduation Requirement (Basic Rules)

You must meet both conditions: Course Credits + Proficiency Certification:

  • Course Credits: At least 6 credits, reaching the High-Intermediate level or above.

  • Proficiency Certification: Choose one of the following two options:
    1. Pass one of the English proficiency tests with a score that meets the university's standard.
    2. Complete the English Learning Portfolio by accumulating 100 points.

English Test Exemption Standards

If your English test score meets the following standards, you may apply for an exemption.
Please bring the application form + the original and a copy of your valid test score report (within 2 years) to apply during the designated period.

  • Check Your Test Scores

    Check if your current English test scores meet the "English Test Exemption Standards."
    If they do, you can apply for an exemption during the specified period (note the scope of the exemption).

  • Take Courses and Get Certified

    If you do not meet the exemption standards or have no test scores, in addition to taking courses, you must pass the "Proficiency Certification" through either of these methods:

    • Take an English proficiency test and meet the required score
    • Participate in "English Learning Portfolio" activities to accumulate 100 points
